The Acorn Shanty Crew of Minehead, Somerset

Home Page

The Acorn Shanty Crew was formed in 2014 from a group of folkies who are members of the Acorn Folk Club based in Minehead, Somerset. It was the brainchild of Eileen Ann Moore who also runs the folk club with her partner Jim Parham. The photo above shows the Crew gathered around the statue of John Short (Yankee Jack) which is on the harbourside at Watchet.

Yankee Jack was a Watchet shantyman from the days of sail. He gave a total of 57 sea shanties to folk song collector Cecil Sharp in the early nineteen hundreds and is the Crew's inspiration.

Soon after our formation, Acorn Shanty Crew were interviewed live on 10Radio and performed a few of our shanties. You can listen to the broadcast by clicking here
